A Critique of Escapism in “It Had to Be Murder” and Rear Window - Literature Essay Samples

Both â€Å"It Had to Be Murder†, written by Cornell Woolrich, and Rear Window, the film directed by Alfred Hitchcock based on the book, tell a strange tale of a nosy protagonist in a story about the occasionally blurred line between fantasy and reality. The protagonists’ lives appear to revolve around voyeuristic behaviors that seem to make up the majority of their personalities as they seek to immerse themselves in the lives of their neighbors, observing the individual inhabitants and noting their activities. Both Woolrich and Hitchcock use the voyeurism of the protagonist to criticize society for their eagerness to accept a false reality. â€Å"I didn’t know their names.† This statement immediately introduces the protagonist of â€Å"It Had to Be Murder† with a hook that draws reads in from the start. The first person voice that the story is written in is perfect for luring readers deeper into the mind of the solitary Hal Jefferies, a man with apparently no purpose in life, other than to invade the privacy of his neighbors with his gaze. The transitions from scene to scene are vague and littered with Jefferies’ personal thoughts and feelings, in a form akin to stream of consciousness. Rear Window is filmed in a manner similar to what could be described as the cinematic universe’s version of a first person voice. This creates an effect much like that of the story’s, but with more â€Å"intellectual and emotional resources† (McFarlane 16) needed from the audience to bring the narrative to life, as they are forced to try to adopt the viewpoint of L.B. Jefferies. To do this , Hitchcock employs clever filmmaking that gives the audience the impression of seeing through Jefferies gaze, like when Lisa is introduced. In that scene, she appears ethereal, almost floating in front of Jefferies as he wakes up, still clearly a bit bleary from sleep. One notable difference between â€Å"It Has to Be Murder† and Rear Window is the portrayal of the protagonist, Hal or L. B. Jefferies, and how it affects his constant observations of his neighborhood. In the short story, Jefferies is virtually alone. Boyne is the one person that he contacts with his information, though Boyne’s statement â€Å"Where’ve you been the last sixty-two years?†(Woolrich 5) implies that they have not had much, if any, contact recently. His only other ally is Sam, who he treats as more of a servant than a confidant. In contrast, the movie Jefferies has the support system of Lisa and Stella, both of whom are both invested in his well-being, but admonish his addition to voyeurism. What is interesting to note is that Lisa, a symbol of the perfection of reality, seems to be drawn into Jefferies’ world as she learns more and more about the possible murder. Her demeanor transforms as she chooses to involve herself with the narrativ e. She becomes more adventurous, sneaking into Thorwald’s, the murderer, apartment, and discusses more than her work or her relationship. She even changes her style, wearing jeans in the final scene. However, it is important to note that, as Jefferies sleeps, Lisa takes out one of her fashion magazines and happily begins to read it, showing that she has not completely sacrificed her identity in order to become someone who fits within the narrative that she has experienced. Most importantly, these two works both are pointing out their perspective audiences and accusing them of being a form of voyeur. The acts of reading and watching a movies both provide an intimate connection between the characters and those invested in the storyline, without them having a real connection besides the fascinations the consumers have with engrossing themselves in another reality. This is form of escapism, similar to Jefferies with his constant observations of people he never seems to interact with, used as a substitute for the dullness of reality. What both Hitchcock and Woolrich are telling their respective audiences is that they themselves are voyeurs, wasting their time with what could potentially be an interesting story, but ultimately has not effect on their lives. Like in Rear Window, they could be in a relationship with a perfect woman like Lisa but are ignoring her in favor of immersing themselves in what they see as a more exciting reality than their own. It seems to be no coincidence that these works were done when they were. The original text was written in 1942, just after the Great Depression had ended and World War II had begun. Both eras marked important moments in entertainment history. The 1930s was when movies became a popular pastime as people yearned to escape the harsh realities of unemployment, starvation, homelessness, or even just the helpless feeling that life would never return to the glory of the Roaring 20s. A trip to the cinema provided a brief respite from the troubles of reality during the Depression, while World War II presented something entirely different: wartime propaganda. Frequently shown on posters, in newspapers, or even before a movie, wartime propaganda was used to rally support for the war effort was positive messages about patriotism or depicting the Aix Powers as little more than monsters. All of this media hid from the public the true horrors of war behind simple messages. While Woolrich could have been referencing either one of these eras as he described the immersion of a man into a life that was not his own, they both are very prominent parts of social culture at the time that involved a form of escapism from reality. However, Rear Window was released twelve years later in a different climate to a new audience, so a new way to deliver the original message had to be developed. Brian McFarlane discusses this topic of making a film relevant to a younger audience, saying that the directors’ focus â€Å"seemed to lie primarily in how works of earlier centuries might be made to seem relevant to later generations†(17). Though the film did not come centuries after â€Å"It Had to Be Murder† was written, a slight update had to be made, so Jefferies was given a nice camera, a form of modern technology that did not exist for public consumption a decade earlier. This camera can be seen as a symbol for of new inventions that exploded out of the post-war era. One of these inventions was a widely accessible and affordable television that soon became a centerpiece of the average American home, bringing immediate entertainment to families and providing an alternative to going outside or talkin g with others in a similar way that Jefferies uses his camera to entertain himself. Stella even makes the comment â€Å"What people ought to do is get outside their own house and look in for a change† (Hitchcock) in regards to Jefferies inclination to voyeurism and her noticing it as a trend. The only danger in â€Å"It Had to Be Murder† and Rear Window presents itself when Jefferies begins to interact with Thorwald. This changes the balance of the early part of the story as Jefferies is forced to face the gravity of the situation that he has allowed to become his reality. Though, in this moment, all of the morally dubious voyeurism seems to have righted itself, the fact remains that Jefferies would not be in any danger if he had ignored the happenings of his neighbors. This is a notable moment because it seems to provide justification for accepting a false reality, as now Jefferies has an exciting life, though it almost comes at the cost of his life. The point of irony in the film comes when Jefferies and Lisa believe that they may have witnessed evidence of a murder, but they only begin to doubt themselves when they watch as Miss Lonelyhearts, one of the neighbors, is attacked by one of her many suitors. Bearing witness to her heartbreak after another failed conquest, Lisa goes as far as to say, â€Å"Im not much on rear-window ethics† (Hitchcock) even though she, like Jefferies, had been staring eagerly out the window. This great emotion about one failed relationship that neither Jefferies nor Lisa was invested in echoes the tone of the soap opera, a genre of television that rose to popularity in the 50s. This relates back to Hitchcock’s theme of demonstrating the hard of modern media on reality, as no person should act more upset about an attack than a murder- a double murder if the dog is included in the count. â€Å"It Had to Be Murder† and Rear Window are both used by their respective creators to criticize the fantasy-addicted nature of society by comparing it to nothing more than a form of voyeurism. Though Hitchcock modernized his rendition of the tale in order to make it more relevant to his audience, it continues to carry the same massage of looking to the real world for meaning in life. The United States Into World War I - 855 Words

The First World War was once one of the most harmful and deadliest wars of all time. A few countries participated within the battle together with Russia, Great Britain, Germany, and France. When the European nations went to war, Americans wanted nothing to do with the war. The twenty-eighth U.S. president Woodrow Wilson, led America through World War I. Wilson was a college professor, university president and Democratic governor of New Jersey before winning the White House in 1912. Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war to make the world â€Å"safe for democracy.† President Wilson could not prevent getting America involved in WWI, because the Germans attacked and threatened American ships holding civilians hostage the allies would have lost (The White House). The first years of WWI, the U.S. made certain to remain out of the way. Germany’s resumption of submarine attacks on passenger and merchant ships became the primary motivation behind Wilson’s decision to lead the United States into World War I. Following the sinking of an unarmed French boat, the Sussex, in the English Channel, Wilson threatened to sever diplomatic relations with Germany unless the German Government refrained from attacking all passenger ships and allowed the crews of enemy merchant vessels to abandon their ships prior to any attack. The Germans promised that they would not sink unarmed passenger ships without warning, however, they promised twice and twice they broke their promise. Human Resource Issues Affecting Horizon Aircrafts And Solutions

Question: Discuss about the Report On Human Resource Issues Affecting Horizon Aircrafts And The Possible Solutions. Answer: Human resource issues affecting horizon aircrafts. All the issues relating to human resource can be broadly classified into four areas, namely: culture, training and development, diversity and performance management. This can all be expounded on in this report. The report will first identify all the human resource issues that affect the company before giving some form of solutions and recommendations that can be used to curb the issues and salvage the company from the impending takeover. Culture The company being multinational and operating in more than one country, shows that it must have so many different types of employees. It is noted that the main branch of the company which is in Australia, the staff members are not functioning in unison. They are not working together as they are supposed to be. This is attributed to some form of communication breakdown between the different teams in the management circles. This has led to some negative form of mental thinking by the workers that they do not have to perform their duties to perfection but rather, they can just try and do anything close to how its supposed to be done. We have seen that this has spread to the other countries creating some chain whereby also the other countries have communication breakdowns with the main branch in Australia. As seen by the poor and uncoordinated types of products that they produce this lack of efficient communication channels is really affecting the company and is even causing some customers to threaten to leave if the lack of quality persists. This lack of unity and proper communication channels, is also evident in the departments whereby even the people that are responsible for a certain sub design part do not coordinate with those tasked with making a subsequent element of the same design. There is complete lack of coordination and integration between employees and this has become the culture at the company. Solution In a bid to counter this I would recommend the organization to come up with seminars in which the employees are taught on how to coordinate with each other so as to build a proper culture for all the employees to work together (Dos Reis,2008). This will create an aspect of unity between all the employees and therefore help improve quality of the products that the company produces. This will help build a strong foundation for the new workers who will come and join the company in future (Delaney,2009). This would have altered the negative culture that is currently being experienced in the organization (Dos Reis,2008). In an attempt to make the employees work to perfection the company can come up with reward systems/ reward incentives (Dos Reis,2008). This may include the individual, team based and the organizational incentives. This will make the workers do their duties to the best of their knowledge and even seek consultations on how to improve on the quality of their outputs (Dos Reis,2008).The other branches also should look for ways of having constant communication with the other branches especially during production. Due to the distance the managers could give reports on the progress of their part of production to the subsequent managers either through, emails, phone calls and even the more recent video calls. This will lead to efficient production of the final products therefore reducing the amounts of complains by the customers. This will create customer loyalty (Dos Reis,2008). Diversity The fact that the company operates in very many countries already portrays the image of it being diverse and welcoming to all people, however at the ground this is not the case at all (Dos Reis,2008). Despite the fact that the company has a written policy that states that every other employee is supposed to observe gender, religion sexual orientation and age. This policy is hardly followed. In the main branch of the company it is seen as there is some form of misunderstanding between the different generations of workers. This is seen as the senior staff are not known to be in unison or working together with apprentices. Another major diversity issue arises in the companys branch in china whereby there is a lack of recruitment of people with disabilities in China. Managers are actively ignoring job applications of people with disabilities, even when their skills are above and beyond other candidates. This is against the rules and regulations of employing people in the united nations. Which states that all people provided they are qualified of a certain position, regardless of their disabilities, gender or even race is supposed to be given an equal opportunity (Delaney, 2009). Another issue is that the companys human resource department does not have a clear set of practices to help employees understand each other (Delaney, 2009). The fact that people are so different to each other and the fact the company is operational in other countries brings some form of diversity which is not embraced and catered for by the human resource department (Delaney, 2009). Solutions The issue of diversity has been discussed worldwide in conventions, meetings of world leaders and even religious leaders (Schuler,2013). In order for this company to be on the safe side it should first make the human resource people understand what diversity is (Schuler,2013). This will help them create rules that can allow for workers to embrace it. This department should outlay rules some consequences to those employees who perform any acts of discrimination. Apart from that the company should come up with an equal employment opportunity policy (Schuler,2013). This will allow for the employment of people of all nature including those with disabilities. This rule should especially be enforced in Chin (Delaney, 2009). The Chinese branch should be requested to employ people with disabilities as long as they can perform their required duties and have all the necessary skills. International performance management It has been noted that the company does not take into consideration performance reviews in its branches. It only conducts this reviews in the main branch which does not produce anything in particular. This therefore is not quite beneficial to the organization as a whole. This has also been noted by the there is no proper coordination of the decisions that have been made. This is seen as the business does not take into consideration the economic impacts that the companies face Solution. The company should evaluate all the employees basing on the economic conditions of the countries that they live in. this would allow the company to give performance appraisal basing on the economic conditions of the areas that they are in (Delaney,2009).The company should employ some incentives such as individual incentives, team based incentives and organization wide incentives. All this affect employee performance on one way or another (Collins,2008). Individual incentive is a way of relating employees performances and the pay that is corresponding to the rate of work that is done. They include price rate systems, bonuses and special incentive programs for example contests for meeting performance targets to rewards for performance over time (Collins,2008). Team based incentives are those designed to reward exceptional levels of achievements that have been obtained by a group of workers in the organization (Collins,2008). Organizational incentives are those that occur in situations whereby the employee benefits only when the organization or company gets a profit (Collins,2008). Therefore when an organization gets higher profit margins, their employees are rewarded also with bonuses (Collins,2008). Training and developement The company is seen to be experiencing quite a lot of issues in regards to training and development of employees. This is mainly seen as employees move from one branch to another branch. It takes quite a lot of time for them to transmission and settle down well. This shows that there is no systematic workforce planning and management development programs. Solution The company should employ some form of induction process. induction is the process by which new people in the organization are educated on how things operate on the different parts of the company (Noe,2010) The new representative's initially contact with his or her physical and human workplace is critical, since it will condition his or her association with the organization (Noe,2010). The worker must feel upheld and vital (Noe,2010). The first individual he or she will meet is the quick director, who ought to display the corporate profile notwithstanding giving data on the association's experience, values, customer base, administrations offered, staff, and expected conduct (Noe,2010). The immediate superior will also specify the newcomers role. Implementation plan Below is a diagram of a set of implementation plans that when considered well will yield great zresults for Horizon aircrafts. So as to improve the company and avoid take over, this plan has to be implemented since it will allow for coordination between employees of diverse natures, who will work together to give the company the much needed quality. Apart from that the plan encompasses some form of integration whereby all the employees will work together therefore the production quality will improve massively. Conclusion The company horizon aircrafts experienced quite a lot of problems that are human resource oriented. The fact that the company operates in more than just one country makes it even more challenging and delicate. This therefore means that these issues are supposed to be addresses so as to prevent the oncoming imminent takeover. With the solutions provided its clear that no problem cannot be resolved if proper strategies are put in place. The policies in place are particularly meant to protect and prepare the company in case of any threats and risks come to pass. References Noe, R. A. (2010). Why Beowulf is a True Epic Hero Essay Example

Why Beowulf is a True Epic Hero Paper It seems as though humanity is fixed on one form of what and how a hero ought to be. The epic hero is the central figure in a long narrative that reflects the values and heroic ideals of a particular society. Beowulf is an illustration of this in most aspects because he fought for the common good, had a superhuman trait of strength in his hands, and showed tremendous courage and bravery when entering a battle despite death might win in the end. Beowulf shows throughout the poem that his actions are in no way selfish. John D. Niles states in The Fatal Contradiction in Beowulf (94), Before the fight he declares himself willing to accept whatever outcome the lord see fit to grant. This shows that Beowulf does not fight to win personal glory; he did it for his people. A quality an epic hero should acquire. Beowulf was proud to know he pleased his people by defeating Greened and later on Grenades mother. He goes on to show throughout the poem that he will defend the Gears at all costs. Bernard F. Happen suggests that Beowulf is in fact far from a true hero. Its apparent that this Is not exact because its proven that Beowulf chose to fight alone so the fight would be equal. He knew the potential outcome, death. Epic heroes dont naturally fight with an army or side by side a friend, they take on their challenger alone. Beowulf chose to conquer a number of villains by his own hand to ensure the Seats would remain In peace. When we think of heroes, we automatically think of superpowers and extravagant Holon suits with capes and gadgets. Like Superman and Spenserian, modern day examples of heroes, Beowulf contained an almost superhuman Like quality. He had an ultimate strength In his hands. In his battle with Greened, Beowulf fought with no weapons to equal the fight and to show the meaning of true defeat without It being all for his glory. He killed Greened and put Warthogs and his people at ease. They saw Beowulf as a true hero as well. Beowulf Is definitely an epic hero. He fought for his people to the death and defeated numerous monsters. He was aware of his responsibility as a king to do whatever It took to protect the Seats. Beowulf Is a ferocious warrior with no tragic flaws who died for his people. Like John D. Niles states, If the behavior of anyone In the poem Is to be considered Irresponsible and Impractical, It Is that of the Gears, whoso failure to live by the heroic Ideal proves to be Impractical In the extreme, even to the point of leading to their ruin as soon as they no longer have a hero to protect them. Reduce the Use of Of

Reduce the Use of Of Reduce the Use of â€Å"Of† Reduce the Use of â€Å"Of† By Mark Nichol How long can you go on writing without using of? You’ll quickly find that it’s an invaluable word, but writers often take it for granted, and its repeated use is a sure sign of prolixity. Of is a preposition, a word positioned before its object: In â€Å"a stroke of luck,† for example, of is the preposition of luck. We rely on such constructions often and, in moderation, they’re perfectly acceptable but we can easily overuse them. Fortunately, they’re (usually) easily revised: For example, with a few strokes of the pen (or a few taps on the keyboard), â€Å"a stroke of luck† becomes â€Å"a lucky stroke.† The formula is easy just convert the second noun in a â€Å"(noun) of (noun)† phrase to an adjective and move the first noun after the adjective. But such a strategy isn’t always elegant: â€Å"A pen’s stroke† might appeal to a computer seeking the most concise, efficient phrasing, but it is jarring to a human mind, which prefers â€Å"a stroke of the pen.† One’s goal, however, should be to reduce, not eliminate, use of of: After you’ve written a document, search for of, and if you find that you have used it more than once in a sentence or several times in a paragraph, consider revising one or more phrases in which it appears. For example, a sentence with an in-line list, such as â€Å"Information theory has been crucial in the invention of the compact disc, the technology of mobile phones, and the development of the Internet† can be revised to â€Å"Information theory has been crucial in the invention of the compact disc, the technology behind mobile phones, and the Internet’s development.† Note, however, that of is sometimes mistakenly omitted: â€Å"He took a couple days off† is acceptable in casual writing, but â€Å"He took a couple of days off† is correct, and regardless should always be followed by of, as in â€Å"I’m supporting her regardless of whether she’s right or wrong† (though â€Å"regardless of† is redundant to whether and might better be eliminated from the sentence). This post lists some wordy prepositional phrases that can be easily replaced by single words or shorter phrases, and this one suggests strategies for achieving more concise writing by avoiding prepositional phrases altogether. STRATEGIC OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT(EBUs602) ASSIGNMENT Essay - 2

STRATEGIC OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT(EBUs602) ASSIGNMENT - Essay Example Those products are sold under different brand names across the globe. The supply chain managers at P&G discovered a prevalent bullwhip for its several brands especially pampers diapers. Initiation of â€Å"vendor-managed inventory system† for the supply chain of diaper to ensure harmonization of the supply chain (Arai & Kimura, 2005, P.67). This approach resulted to in market share of P&G and a reduction of the Wall-Marts operating cost. P&G should utilize a policy of replenishing the stock of the suppliers more frequently by adopting â€Å"just-in-time† system in order to smooth flow of products and avoid building up excess stock at one point while risking running out of stock at other times (Koch, 2008. P.127). P&G should ensure the prices of the products are stable at all times irrespective of quantity demanded by suppliers in order to ensure that suppliers order the exact products they demand rather than order large quantities to enjoy huge discounts (Bettley, David, & Tarek, 2005, p.173). P&G should allocate products to the suppliers according to previous demands rather instead of basing relying on clients’ demands that could otherwise be based on speculation of price changes or shortage in supply. Cisco is a manufacturer of electronic products. Initially, the company relied on Xilinx Company based at San Jose, California which supplied it with electronic components. However, Xilinx relied on intermediary distributors such as Avnet. At some points, this association resulted to significant variance involving the quantity of the electronic components demanded by Cisco company and the amount produced and distributed by Xilinx through it distributors. These variations forced Cisco make a bargain with Xilinx in order to streamline the supply chain system and harmonize the products demanded with the product supplied. This requirement resulted to change in strategies used by Xilinx and as a result

Musuem of Tolerance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Musuem of Tolerance - Essay Example I visited the holocaust section, tolerance centre, and the multimedia learning centre of the museum. The two and half hour guided tour was full of new information and an episode of holocaust memories revisited. And I entered the tolerance centre through the prejudiced door. It was a moment of realization that we all hold prejudices which can grow to dangerous proportions and can become a threat to others, if left unchecked. The drinking fountains named â€Å"whites only† and â€Å"coloured† once again reminded me of the world of prejudices. The pseudo gas chamber that I saw just moments before rushed into mind again when I saw these two labels. The concentration camp gate that shows two gates with the labels, â€Å"able bodied† and â€Å"children and others†, was a shocking sight that evoked history like lightning. It was through this kind of a gate that children and weak bodied adults walked through into gas chambers in concentration camps to get exhumed alive. And even after such suffering, human prejudices continue to exist. The quotations and slogans written on the walls especially attracted and inspired me. The skit that showed the contemporary racial prejudices was also well enacted. The :point of view diner† was another unique experience for me. The simple example shown on this interactive show leads smoothly to bigger racial and discrimination related questions. The message that every one is responsible for what is happening in our society seems extremely relevant to me. I watched the film on genocide in the small theatre. And then the holocaust section. But I felt the narration is a little bit vague and inaccurate as was observed by many others (Marcuse). But I really felt like experiencing â€Å"a living social document† (Miller, 248f). The film show that followed made me realize that it was ordinary people put in not so ordinary situations who committed all these genocides and crimes. The voices in the mock Wannsee conference

Theme of Fahrenheit 451 Essay Example for Free

Theme of Fahrenheit 451 Essay The theme of Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury contains a setting of a world where society itself was destructive. In this story characters and society are portrayed to be soulless and self-centered. Immoral things such as killing in this society have no affect on characters and ignorance is considered as the norm. By the setting containing an environment where life has no importance and entertainment is more valuable, this aspect does affect the characters’ attitude, decisions and general behavior entirely. There are a few examples that describe perfectly how the setting impacts the character such as Clarisse, Mildred and Guy. Even though all characters are set in a dystopia, not all characters react the same way. Most characters are consumed by their surrounding, while the setting reflects others. In the scene where Montag and Clarisse had their first encounter, the mood is set as romantic and relaxing. The city streets are empty and calm with the moon shining down and creating a silhouette as the wind lightly blows through them. It isn’t a cold night but refreshing. Clarisse walks slowly towards him enjoying every moment of the wind brushing against her body and hair. Everything seems to be in slow motion where there is no cars rushing down the road. The streets are quite and full of tranquility. The only characters that are walking down the street are Clarisse and Montag. This setting reflects on the true nature of Clarisse’s personality. The setting describes a relaxing atmosphere where everything seems to fall into place and this is how Clarisse attitude is towards life it self. The general behavior of this character shows how the little things are what matters, enjoying the surrounding and admire the small things, which was no longer appreciated. Unlike Clarisse, Mildred is a city girl who needs to feel the rush. Her attitude towards life made her fit perfectly in the society she was set in. only caring for the thrill and anything that would keep her distracted at the moment. In the scene where Guy shows Mildred the hidden books he has collected throughout the year, one can see how the setting explains Mildred’s behavior towards her husband and society. In the scene where both character is located in their home everything seemed to be separated, Mildred had her parlor while Guy has an empty room. The atmosphere is dry and cluttered, giving the feeling of a non-welcoming home. In the scene when Guy takes the books out from the ventilator to show Mildred, the secret he has been hiding from her for so many year, Mildred looks down to the books as if the floor has open and let out a family of rodents. She slides down the wall as if the universe crashed into million of pieces. Fearful of what lies ahead, she trembles and as ks Guy to stop himself before he get any deeper then what he is in. This setting not only shows the emptiness between Mildred and Guy but also how weak and influenced by society Mildred is. One of the scene were setting can be seen as a huge impact is when Guy Montag is in the subway. This scene is described as a dark place with jet-black tiles. The atmosphere is full of emptiness and helplessness. Guy Montag is shown to be an emotional mess, confused by his thoughts and physically numb. As he looked at the Bible and tried to understand as much as he could from the book, he remembered a moment in his childhood when he was tying to fill a sieve with sand. This memory compared the words of the Bible to the sand. He felt as if the words were slipping out of his mind because he couldn’t concentrate over the loud announcement repeating itself in the train stations radio. When he notices he wouldn’t collect any information because of the distraction Guy went into frenzy. Guy yelled trying to over come the voices of the train station radio. The place itself is a trap to Montag and he is not able to breathe or concentrate. Slowly, Montag gives up and hopes someone will come to his rescue, to take him back to his old life when things were simpler. One can see how the setting causes anger and frustration in Montag. This setting shows how Montag’s internal point of view can be express through the tiles of the subways. This setting supports Montag’s frustration and sees how it affects his behavior in general. As shown through out the essay setting contains a huge impact on the characters. Setting is nothing more then an extension of the character itself. The best example is the setting of Guy Montag in the train. Everything seems to foreshadow an event were something bad is going to happen from the tiles to the atmosphere of the place that was described. Though the characters play out the events of the story, the setting is what makes the character react and behave the way it does. In scene when Montag meets Clarisse the setting is what showed her true behavior and all the aspect of Clarisse. A setting is more then just a place but in general it is what impacts the characters to behave and react as they do in the story.
